Michelangelo rucci commonwealth games

AFL Season Don't miss out on the headlines from Sport. Followed categories will be added to My News. But to whom? Today, the Olympic stadium built for those Games is without its athletics track as it is being converted to the new home of English Premier League football team, West Ham United.

Both will need such a gift in The Reds, if their progress continues as expected, will be seeking a bigger and more modern home as Coopers Stadium at Hindmarsh could in its 30th year without major redevelopment that increases its capacity. And if there is an appeal for public money, surely the public — as the Roast has declared before — deserves to know just who is running the Reds. Or does the new A-League management team continue the push for a new rectangular stadium in the city by offering the carrot of a second Adelaide-based national league licence to the South Australian state government?

Which would the new Dutch-led consortium directing the Reds prefer? But the need for a second city stadium will not go away. The inevitable protests have begun. Adelaide United needs a better home. The Adelaide Crows want a new home in the city district. And many sports will be denied a legacy from the upgrade of infrastructure without the Commonwealth Games.

Many sports — such as hockey at The Pines — will question where the funding is to come for major upgrades to their venues without a Commonwealth Games budget. Horse racing has left the city centre. This ,seat Olympic arena was downscaled to an 83, capacity for rugby and and 82, seats for Australian football after the Games. Or should there be a vision for this new stadium that considers its long-term use from the start? By , Adelaide will certainly be in need of a second stadium to work alongside the Oval.

The city dodged a bullet this year when the Redbacks cricket team failed to qualify for the Sheffield Shield final. A second city stadium - particularly one with a roof - eases the pressure and strain on Oval if the Stadium Management Authority succeeds in making Adelaide a preferred destination for the Wallabies, the Socceroos and any other major sporting event outside the cricket and football calendar.

This includes concerts, particularly when Football Park will no longer exist as an alternative venue to the Oval. But there is that legacy question on the new Commonwealth Games arena - and the subplots this stadium presents. If it is a 50,seat arena, would it serve as the new - and third home - of the Adelaide Football Club that has Gerard as its patron?

Which would want to stay at the open-air Oval? Which would prefer the closed arena at Mile End? It also changes the landscape of the SA sporting scene. HE may have the best job in Australian football - and he certainly was earmarked for the AFL chief executive role long ago - but not everyone had a good handle on the Gillon McLachlan story on Wednesday.
