California department of fish and game species of special concern
SSCs should be considered during the environmental review process. Section of the CEQA Guidelines clearly indicates that species of special concern should be included in an analysis of project impacts if they can be shown to meet the criteria of sensitivity outlined therein.
Project-level impacts to listed rare, threatened, or endangered species species are generally considered significant thus requiring lead agencies to prepare an Environmental Impact Report to fully analyze and evaluate the impacts.
In assigning "impact significance" to populations of non-listed species, analysts usually consider factors such as population-level effects, proportion of the taxon's range affected by a project, regional effects, and impacts to habitat features. These publications are updated periodically as staff and funding allow, and updates are subject to peer review.
Final publication of an SSC document requires approval of the Director. A list of nominee taxa considered for SSC status is developed during the course of a major revision of an SSC document. Metrics see above are applied to each taxon and scores are maintained in a Nominee Species Database NSD ; SSC threshold criteria are determined and a ranking scheme developed which discriminates between SSCs and taxa that do not qualify for that designation.

Rare, but found in sufficient numbers and distributed widely enough that the potential for extinction is low at this time.
Distributed in a limited number of occurrences, occasionally more if each occurrence is small. Distributed in one to several highly restricted occurrences, or present in such small numbers that it is seldom reported. E Endangerment.
Not endangered. Endangered in a portion of its range. Endangered throughout its range. D Distribution. More or less widespread outside California. Rare outside California. Endemic to California. Global ranking at species level overall condition of species throughout its range. Apparently secure; clearly lower than G3, but some factors exist to create concern e. Population demonstrably secure to incapable of being eradicated due to being commonly found throughout the world.
All sites historical; although species not seen in 20 years, habitat exists. Extinct throughout range. Extinct in the wild, but still exists in cultivation or in zoos. Maps showing current and historic range accompany each account. Definition of a California Fish Species of Special Concern California Fish Species of Special Concern are defined as those species, subspecies, Evolutionary Significant Unit, or Distinct Population Segment of native fish that currently satisfy one or more of the following not necessarily mutually exclusive criteria: are known to spawn in California's inland waters; are not already listed under either federal or state endangered species acts or both ; are experiencing, or formerly experienced, population declines or range retractions that, if continued, could qualify them for listing as threatened or endangered status; have naturally small populations exhibiting high susceptibility to risk from stressors that, if realized, could lead to declines that would qualify them for listing as threatened or endangered.
